We're excited to share the story of how The Lyons Farmers Garden was designed by our students with the help of our fantastic STEM teacher, Ms. Brickhouse.
During the 3rd quarter of school, Ms. Brickhouse worked with the 5th grade classes to design the garden. The students were divided into 12 groups and had to create a garden that included 12 raised beds, various structures, and researched plants to sow. They drew their designs on graph paper, created 3D models, and gave presentations to persuade the judges - the parents on the garden committee - to choose their design.
The judges chose their three favorite designs, which were presented to the entire school. Each class then voted for their favorite design, and the winning design was built the following week during spring break! It was an incredible experience for the students, who learned about gardening, design, presentation skills, and teamwork.
But the garden project didn't stop there. While the 5th graders were working on their designs, Ms. Brickhouse worked with the 2nd and 3rd graders to plant seeds and watch them grow. They learned about the life cycle of plants and got to see their own plants grow and flourish. The 4th graders learned about hydroponics and grew plants that way, exploring a different approach to gardening.
We're incredibly proud of our students and of Ms. Brickhouse. They've shown us what's possible when we work together, and they've created a space that's both beautiful and functional. We invite everyone to come and visit our garden, and to see for themselves the amazing things that can happen when students are given the opportunity to learn and create!
